Veteran’s Parade: Beautiful old dogs

darla

Last year she was one of the bright stars in our Veteran’s Parade. This is Darla (Am/Can CH Kaja’s Little Rascal) who heard the call of the ring steward one more time. Now 13, last year Darla took that big open ring like she was still competing for Best in Show. You should’ve seen that girl move!

The Veterans Class at Fort St. Clair Kennel Club is a very special event. Open to any dog over the age of seven, the class is only competitive at the breed level, where after Best of Breed, the judge will pick a Best Veteran in Breed and a Best of Opposite Sex to Best Veteran in Breed. (The Best Veteran receives an orange rosette, best opposite an oversize lavender flat ribbon.)

On Sunday afternoon the winners of Best Veteran in Breed are invited to the group ring for exhibition. The applause is thunderous and there is hardly a dry eye in the house, watching these old campaigners take their victory laps.

The veterans class is open to dogs over seven years of age, and dogs may be spayed or neutered. Entry fee for this class is $10, and entries close this coming Wednesday, April 9. Even if you don’t have a veteran, you’ll want to make time to see the Parade of Veterans on Sunday afternoon, and all of the beautiful dogs like Darla.

Let’s Show in Brace!

brace

When you look up “brace dogs” these days, mostly what you find are orthopedic devices to help injured or disabled dogs. This is kind of sad because “a brace of dogs” is a wonderful thing to behold, and a long-standing tradition in hunting breeds.

Three years ago at Fort St. Clair Kennel Club, we unveiled our special attraction Brace class. Judged after best of breed, each pair of dogs has a single handler. The judges choose the pair that they think best evoke the image of a “matched” pair– in appearance, and/or breed type, or movement, or synchronicity.

The dogs can be on separate leashes and do not have to wear a “coupler.” We don’t mind if the dogs have been spayed or neutered. They don’t have to be entered in any other class at the show. They do have to be AKC registered and have at least one owner in common. Of course, all breeds are welcome! The entry fee for brace is $10 for the pair.

The winner of the brace competition at breed level gets a special rosette, and then may compete for Best Brace in Show on Sunday afternoon in the group ring. Best Brace in Show gets a rosette, a pair of kennel leashes and a silver bowl. Think about bringing your dogs out for brace. It’s a lot of fun.

Reserved Grooming!

Reserved

Just a reminder that for the first time there will be reserved grooming available at our show. We have lots of free grooming space (all in the same building with the rings), but we have been told that some people would be willing to pay to have a good spot reserved for them so they didn’t have to worry about it.

So the spots immediately adjacent to the rings will be reserved for the weekend for $25 each section.

(I don’t have an immediate size, but approximately 8 by 10) There is electric at each site.

If you’d like to reserve a space, send us an email at fsckc@earthlink.net, send us a check to Fort St. Clair Kennel Club, 1010 W. Riverview Ave, Dayton, OH 45402, or give us a call at (937) 781-6561. We need to know by Monday, April 21 so that we may mark off the spaces.

NEW!! Pre-entry for CAT Test After All.

First, our apologies for not having our ducks in a row.  We started off misinformed and this has been a pretty steep learning curve for us. Initially we thought we would not have time to get a premium list together before the trial date, but we did and we have it. And here it is! Just click the link “FSCKCCAT premium” below, and there you have it.

We have limited entries to 60. The trial will close on Sunday, April 27th (at noon) unless it fills first by pre-entry. If it does fill first through pre-entry, we will announce this here and on our Facebook page, and on our MB-F page.
